Ця стаття узагальнює аргументи та контраргументи в межах наукової дискусії з питань нерівності «чистої» заробітної плати та заробітної плати до сплати податків робітників від 18 до 65 років у десяти найбільших мегаполісах США. Основною метою проведеного дослідження є аналіз ступеня нерівномірності розподілу доходу у основних американських містах та визначення передумов її виникнення. Методичним інструментарієм проведеного дослідження стали методи опитування, аналізу та синтезу, періодом дослідження обрано 2019 рік. Об’єктом дослідження обрано регіони метрополітенів Атланта-Сенді Спрінгс-Розуелл, Чикаго – Непервілл-Елгін, Даллас-Форт-Ворт-Арлінгтон, Х’юстон-Вудлендс-Цукрова земля, Лос-Анджелес-Лонг-Біч-Анахайм, Маямі-Форт-Лодердейл-Вест-Палм-Біч, Нью-Йорк-Ньюарк-Джерсі-Сіті, Філадельфія-Камден-Вілмінгтон, Сан-Франциско-Окленд-Хейуорд та Вашингтон-Арлінгтон-Олександрія, оскільки саме у цих десяти мегаполісах зайнято понад 39 мільйонів осіб, що становить близько чверті загальної зайнятої робочої сили в США. В статті представлено результати емпіричного аналізу розмірів заробітної плати окремих регіонів США, який засвідчив, що Сан-Франциско-Окленд-Хейворд має найвищу середню заробітну плату до сплати податків. Найменше значення коефіцієнту Джині спостерігається у столичному районі Вашингтон-Арлінгтон-Олександрія, в той час як в Сан-Франциско-Окленд-Хейворд коефіцієнт Джині майже на 15% вищий ніж у Вашингтоні-Арлінгтоні-Олександрії. Середня заробітна до сплати податків приблизно на 83% вища в Сан-Франциско-Окленд-Хейворд ніж в Майамі-Форт-Лодердейл-Вест-Палм-Біч, значення для якого є найнижче в країні. За результатами дослідження основних показників, що характеризують ступінь нерівності у розподілу доходів між окремими метрополітенами США (середнє значення, медіана, стандартна помилка середнього значення, 25-й процентиль, 50-й процентиль та коефіцієнт Джині) зроблено висновок про суттєву варітивність значень середньої заробітної плати до сплати податків. Найбільш суттєво дані значення різняться з точки зору розподілу заробітної плати до сплати податків виміряного міжквартильним діапазоном (різниця між 75-м і 25-м процентилями) та коефіцієнтом Джині. Дослідження емпірично підтверджує та теоретично доводить найбільш тісний зв’язок нерівності у розмірах заробітної плати до сплати податків з умовами функціонування ринку праці порівняно з іншими джерелами доходу такими як приріст капіталу, спадщина, державні трансферти тощо.
