Аутизм, також відомий як розлад аутичного спектру (РАС), є генетичним/неврологічним захворюванням, яке вражає близько 2% маленьких дітей у Сполучених Штатах, та викликає певні проблеми в спілкуванні, навчанні, соціалізації та навіть навичках подолання стресу. Діти з аутизмом, як правило, демонструють наявність обмежених або повторюваних моделей поведінки, діяльності та інтересів. Особи з розладом аутичного спектру навчаються інакше, ніж інші, і їхню увагу можна завоювати й підтримувати за допомогою повторень і рутини. Особи, які мають легку або важку форму розладу аутичного спектру, часто відчувають більше труднощів з адаптацією до змін робочого середовища та суспільства в цілому. Отже, незважаючи на те, що багато осіб з розладом аутичного спектру можуть успішно виконувати свою роботу, вони часто зазнають дискримінації та не надають їм відповідних умов, щоб отримати та зберегти постійну роботу. У цій статті надано огляд проблеми аутизму для підвищення обізнаності населення, а також рекомендації для покращення адаптації дорослих з аутизмом на робочому місці. За результатами дослідження встановлено, що розлад аутичного спектру включає ряд симптомів, які спричиняють труднощі в спілкуванні: сплощений афект (або зниження емоційної експресії), поганий зоровий контакт і труднощі з розумінням невербальних сигналів. Ці симптоми ускладнюють пошук праці та утримання робочого місця, а особи з аутизмом регулярно стикаються з дискримінацією та упередженнями як на робочому місці, так і поза ним. Роботодавці виявляють менший інтерес до найму нейродивергентних працівників, навіть якщо вони мають необхідну кваліфікацію та здатні виконувати потрібну роботу, а також багато хто з них не забезпечує достатніх умов для праці оосаб з розладом аутичного спектру. Результати дослідження мають бути корисні для підприємств з різних галузей економіки, а також працівників соціальних служб.
